A Personal Reflection

A personal reflection on the life and work of leading British goldsmith Jacqueline Mina OBE.

Jacqueline Mina is an artist in gold more than a goldsmith, in that gold is her chosen medium of expression. Amanda Game’s very personal tribute to Mina is based on a long friendship between the two women. It explores Mina’s upbringing, her marriage to fellow artist Michael Minas, and her commitment to her family as vital elements in her life as an artist.

All of Mina’s work demonstrates her deep understanding of the cultural history of gold from earliest times. She has experimented freely with the metal over 50 years as a goldsmith, creating subtle sculptural forms and delicate textures which owe much to embroidery and textiles. The daily discipline of drawing informs all her work, allowing her the freedom to work directly into the metal, developing new techniques such as her signature “fusion inlay” of platinum mesh and gauze into gold.

The Goldsmiths’ Company holds superb examples of her work in platinum and gold, representing what Game calls “the most life-enhancing jewellery of modern times.”
