Isla Gilham

About Isla Gilham

Isla grew up in Somerset, day dreaming of the tiara her Great Grandfather, George, had handcrafted decades prior; filigree, timelessly beautiful and, most importantly of all, adorned with juicy ‘jelly tots’. The sugar coated sweets proudly sat where precious stones usually would. Almost half a century later, with this treasured family story as her prevailing inspiration, Isla designs her own precious pieces with playful twists. Isla graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2018 and since then, has exhibited her award winning work internationally.

Maker Enquiry Form

Isla begins each piece by selecting the gemstones. Often, from gem fairs where she feels like a child in a sweet shop. Each stall is laden with jewels that glisten and tempt like delicious treats. She deliberates, before scooping up the most tempting and returning to her workshop. Alike biting into a soft caramel centre, Isla is always excited by what qualities the bite will unveil or enhance. Pattern, glow, refraction. Finally, the morsel is encased in a bespoke setting and the metal is pushed to its contours like a foil surrounding a truffle.
