Shinta Nakajima
About Shinta Nakajima
After completing his BA Metal Craft degree at Musashino Art University in Tokyo, Nakajima worked as a research associate for 5 years under Professor Hiroshi Suzuki, the Japanese-British silversmith. He has won many Goldsmiths’ Crafts & Design Council Awards and completed an MFA with distinction from Sheffield Hallam University in 2023.
Maker Enquiry Form
As a silversmith working in the twenty-first century, Nakajima seeks to confront the question: ‘Why do we decorate?’, to which he replies: “I aim to renew the ornamentation in silversmithing by re-observing the natural form that is retained as the ‘semiotic decoration’”. Using subjective observing and silversmithing techniques, Nakajima preserves the beauty of nature in its original state, with the element of imperfection and impermanence.
