Monica Findlay
About Monica Findlay
Monica Findlay is a Glasgow-based silversmith whose practice is driven by a curiosity for the material presence of the past. Designing based on a nostalgic response to archived artefacts, Monica combines traditional silversmithing techniques with innovative components and surface textures to create contemporary metalwork that questions the interrelation between memory and object. Throughout her body of work, low-relief motifs and intricate wirework replicate and emulate inscribed memories, while embossed traces convey the absence of passing objects that once made contact with the surface. Bringing together storytelling and archaeology, Monica explores tangible remains and their surface qualities as important signifiers or touchstones of memories, both ancient and modern.

My designs are characterised by heavy hand-forged wire, delicate coils, and contrasting surfaces, which I create through patination and texture. I am passionate about honouring the wealth of historical Scottish silver while remaining playful in my approach to the craft. I am drawn to boxes as a medium, perhaps due to my love for collecting little tokens to anchor moments. There’s something about the mystery of what they might contain, and the element of discovery that captures my interest. I hope to extend that same sense of curiosity to the viewer.
