About Maya Selway
The patina of a well-loved wooden dining table. The sun-bleached edge of a velvet curtain. Maya is inspired by the enduring quality of objects around her – the signs of time passing and the marks of human touch. The poetry of the everyday
As well as interpreting this poetry, these moments, into the permanence of gold and precious stones, Maya’s ideas often form when hearing the stories behind a client’s jewellery during the commission process. Memories held within inherited treasures, tales of gems lost or damaged, and accounts of the lives of women past-and-present are all recalled through well-loved jewels.
Maya Selway intro video
With the heart of an artist and the observations of a poet, Maya is a jeweller marked apart by an approach led by ideas rather than technique. Ideas always underpinned by exacting craftsmanship.
She emerged into art school when everybody was telling her that conceptual art was the thing, that grit under the fingernails and simple materials were outmoded and backward looking. But Maya wanted to have both, to live and breathe in a workshop, at the same time as rigorously, nurturing her thoughts and feelings into a conceptual framework that would sustain her work for a lifetime.
