Kumiko Kihara
About Kumiko Kihara
Raised in Kyoto, Japan. Studied goldsmiths in Barcelona and Germany.
My practice is guided by an intuitive, material-led process in which each piece evolves through making. I work primarily with Mitsuro Hikime, a traditional Japanese beeswax technique learned through direct lineage, allowing organic forms and flowing lines to emerge as expressions of emotion and movement. Each piece is inherently unique and informed by slow, hand-crafted processes, including chasing, repoussé, and calligraphy.
The Japanese concept of Ma, the space within and around an object, is central to my work, giving each piece balance, depth, and presence. Rooted in traditional Japanese craftsmanship, my jewellery reinterprets heritage for contemporary sensibilities, creating timeless, functional pieces.

I combine beeswax with the traditional Japanese technique of kumihimo, a hand-braiding process that values patience, repetition, and longevity. Kumihimo is inherently sustainable: it is done by hand, uses minimal tools, and produces little to no waste.
