Kelda Young

About Kelda Young

Kelda’s practice is rooted in a strong connection to materiality and the physical act of making. Inspired by Scottish landscapes, memories, and fleeting moments, she creates abstracted forms that translate ideas into considered compositions. Over time, her work has simplified, allowing greater focus on balance, proportion, and the relationship between form and surface. Kelda combines bold, graphic shapes influenced by architecture with intricate organic details found in nature. These contrasting elements create works that feel both structured and intuitive. Composition remains central to her process, with each piece carefully resolved to achieve visual and physical harmony and balance.

Every piece moves through several stages of making, often beginning by developing surface decoration through subtle ‘ghost’ textures. Kelda use a high-pressure embossing technique in an unusual way to create surface patterns that feel soft, tactile, and inviting. She finds endless possibility in the making process and is often thinking about future designs while still in the early stages of the current piece. Kelda greatly values the individuality of hand fabrication, where subtle variations ensure that no two works are ever the same.
