Kelda Young

About Kelda Young

Kelda’s work is centred around material connection and the physical act of making. By translating memories, photographs and moments into abstracted forms and elements she then creates compositions. Drawn to bold striking shapes found in architecture and intricate organic details found in nature, Kelda combines these opposing elements to create balanced objects. Using a high-pressure embossing technique in an unusual way – to create surface patterns and textures that appear soft and enticing. Implementing a traditional approach to making throughout her practice Kelda incorporates techniques such as engraving and chasing into her designs, often on the back creating another layer of intrigue. The ancient technique of Keum Bu has been a welcomed addition to her practice – a subtle nod to the narrative of the materialisation of memory. Kelda hollow forms most of her work to maintain the striking scale of the finished piece whilst allowing the jewellery or objects to still be wearable. This also encourages people’s curiosity and to engage with the pieces – there is an element of surprise as scale usually coincides with weight.
