About Karolina Baines
Karolina’s jewellery combines vibrant colours with a sense of movement to create sculptural pieces with an elegant yet playful character. The intricate line work and bold colours of her designs intertwine to elicit physical and emotional connections with the wearer. These richly coloured, strikingly textured surfaces stimulate visual and tactile connections in order to comfort, challenge and inspire, while the folded, sculptural forms and suggestive linework convey a sense of movement and momentum.
Karolina graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2015. Her jewellery have been featured in exhibitions throughout the UK, as well as in Europe and America.
More about the maker
Karolina is inspired by the beauty of Japanese textiles and folding techniques as well as the living traditions of weaving and basketry that have been handed down through generations of communities. Her work is strongly rooted in the sketchbook process, especially in the use of collaging and printmaking which she uses to explore her ideas, bringing together geometric patterns and organic forms, before realising them in three-dimensions. Each piece is handcrafted in her Edinburgh studio, often using etching and enamelling to create the intricate, beautifully coloured surfaces that are characteristic of her designs.
