Adrian Hope

About Adrian Hope

Adrian has been a silversmith for more than 40 years, initially in Edinburgh but since 1995 in the Scottish Borders. He grew up in a house where people made things and discovered at Art college that silver is the kindest most forgiving material to explore. It is a responsive, tactile medium and he only uses hand methods. It is like drawing in 3 dimensions and to help his work he makes many of his own tools. Adrian wants the connection between him and his work to be as direct and simple as possible.

Maker Enquiry Form

Adrian’s work, vessels and vases, boxes and other objects are meant to enhance the spaces we live in.
They are made to be informal, tactile and display a quality and character that reflects the work of this maker and his predecessors of ancient times. They are made to intrigue and to encourage in the viewer something of the same complicity this artist feels for his forbears.
The design of each piece is a direct result of the simple but exacting processes involved in bending shaping patterning and texturing this kind material silver.
It is a process of gentle persuasion, encouraging the metal to cooperate.
