Laura Ngyou

About Laura Ngyou

Laura Ngyou’s practice is shaped by a passion for exploration, drawing inspiration from miniature worlds within natural landscapes, from exotic jungle flora to humble rockpools. Born into a large family who span the globe from Asia to north America, she has been lucky enough to discover the wonders these places have to offer.

Her work features richly textured forms composed of multiple components that create intricate, tactile details. Contrasting precious metals with naturally formed gemstones, she achieves a sumptuous, otherworldly quality. With an experimental approach, Laura embraces ambiguity of form, creating abstract pieces that invite closer observation and quiet reflection on the natural curiosities and personal journeys that inspire her work.

Maker Enquiry Form

My approach to making is often process led, primarily concerned with discovery and exploration. I create multiple elements through the rolling, melting, hammering and fine soldering of metal, all beginning as experiments in the manipulation of the material. I like to think of it as sketching in 3D. As I create a piece, multiple, tiny elements will often be organised and rearranged numerous times, like pieces of a puzzle, before I find the “right” composition.
