Balancing Bowl (3), a boundary-pushing Sterling silver and patinated gilding metal objet d’art by Goldsmiths’ Fair exhibitor Juliette Bigley, has been acquired by the V&A Museum, London.
The highly sculptural piece explores the bowl form, yet doesn’t fully embrace practicality as its ‘concave’ element is shallow, off-centre and flat. The work’s rounded silver vessel ‘balances’ on a darkened non-precious metal plinth-like structure – a playful combination of cold and warmth.
Working in base and precious metals, Juliette uses the form of vessels as canvas and focuses particularly on line and form. Her vessels – vases, dishes, bowls – explore notions of function and emerge from the context of the domestic, the rituals that characterise it and our interactions with it. Beginning with a flat sheet of metal, Juliette uses a range of techniques including raising and fabrication to hand-make her pieces.
Juliette is exhibiting Week 2, Stand 62 of Goldsmiths’ Fair. See her exhibitor profile here.
