We paid a visit to jeweller, Mark Nuell who started out as an apprentice gemcutter at the age of 15 before studying to become a goldsmith. Mark cuts his own stones using a faceting machine. When we went to his studio, Mark was cutting amethysts to be used for a neckpiece to be exhibited at this year’s Goldsmiths’ Fair.
Mark showed us the rough cuts and demonstrated the different stages towards creating a faceted and polished stone.
Mark says, ’42 years later I have come full circle, combining jewellery with my own hand cut stones. I am enjoying the freedom of creating faceted stones which are not the usual standard cuts, truly unique one of a kind stones.’
