Learn about Hallmarking and Assaying at Goldsmiths’ Fair

September 14, 2017

The Goldsmiths’ Company Assay Office is appearing at Goldsmiths’ Fair once again this year. Pop in the Binding Room on the first floor of Goldsmiths’ Hall to learn all about the Assay Office’s historic practices still in use today.

The Goldsmiths’ Company Assay Office, the oldest assay office in the UK, has been hallmarking in London since 1300. Dave Merry, Head of Training, Education & Trading Standards Liaison, who’s worked at the Assay Office for 46 years, and his colleagues, will tell you everything you need to know about assaying and hallmarking.

See hallmarking demonstrations, learn about assaying precious metals using both the touchstone technique and an XRF machine, find out about the meanings and history of the hallmarks, and hear about how to spot fakes and forgeries.

Find out more about hallmarking here.

The Assay Office team looks forward to seeing you at the Fair!
