We’ve spoken to the makers whose work and studios are featured in ‘Excellence Made,’ the film by Petr Krejci commissioned specially for Goldsmiths’ Fair 2018.
We spoke to the goldsmith Polly Gaston, whose workshop is based in Ramsgate:
‘Ramsgate is a wonderful place to work; a great little workshop space with good light, and right by the sea so plenty of beauty around to inspire and encourage my designs.
Working with Petr and his crew was a delight. We didn’t know what to expect, but they soon put us at ease and showed us what they wanted. They were so interested and professional throughout. It was great having someone else’s eyes on my work; aspects I take for granted and processes I use daily – drilling, or using a mouth torch, for instance – Petr found fascinating and wanted to capture those aspects in a unique way.
In the film I was working on making ‘flakes’ of gold which are melted pieces of gold that end up in various shapes and sizes, with no idea of what each one will be until it’s done. I was also making some very fine link chain.
I am looking forward to exhibiting at this year’s Goldsmiths’ Fair. I have recently added some new techniques to my work, namely hollow beads, which are a very ancient idea and one I haven’t visited before. They are so old looking, and yet still contemporary!’
