Laura’s passion for travel is reflected in her work, which is often inspired by her fascination for miniature worlds found within the natural landscape – from exotic jungle flora to humble rock pools; drawn toward discovery and exploration. Born into a large family who span the globe from Asia to north America, she has plenty of opportunity to explore the world.
The rich textural forms of Laura’s jewellery are composed of multiple components which cluster and hang together to create movement and intricate, tactile details. Vividly contrasting precious metals and naturally formed gemstones create sumptuous, other-worldly qualities.
Laura’s process is experimental and often process led. She is interested in the ambiguity of form, each piece she creates is ultimately a product of my imagination – an abstract composition which quietly provokes the observer to look more closely, reflect on her journeys and the natural curiosities which have inspired her.
Laura studied applied arts, creating in metal, paper, textiles and ceramics.
With an ambition to learn more about precious metals, she undertook a year’s residency at the prestigious Bishopsland workshops in Oxfordshire in 2012, during which she was awarded accolades, such as a bursary from the Goldsmith’s Company, a prize for gold jewellery design from Jacqueline Mina OBE and also exhibited a hand engraved, raised and chased dish at the V&A Museum.
In 2014 an artist in residence position at South Hill Park, Berkshire, gave her the opportunity to share her skills teaching jewellery and silversmithing to adults. The residency also gave her the freedom to experiment further, with methods of casting and surface decoration, which served to further enrich her growing collection of work.
Laura recently moved to the making community at Cockpit Arts, Holborn, where she undertakes bespoke commissions and creates one-off pieces, as well as limited edition ranges. She also makes jewellery and boxes for the jeweller Romilly-Saumarez Smith.
