CIGAR BOX

1985

Cast Britannia silver, modelled, carved and enamelled coat of arms in rock crystal, platinum wire and gold inside; silver wire inscription applied to outside lid

Sir Edward Ford’s Prime Warden Commission was the work of several specialists including Wally Gilbert for the inscription and modelling, and Dilys Osman for enamelling.

The design drawings acquired by the Goldsmiths’ Company in 2018 include a presentation drawing and more impressionistic views of how the heraldic enamelling inside the lid might look, while one design shows Wally Gilbert thinking aloud about the stop on the hinge to prevent the lid toppling the box over when opened.
